Dawson Leery is fifteen years old and lives in Capeside, Massachusetts. He is the biggest movie fan. His favorite director is Steven Spielberg. He has two best friends, Joey and Pacey. Joey has been Dawson's best friend all his life. She usually enters his second-story room by ladder. They're so close they can even sleep together without shame. Pacey and Dawson have been friends for a long time. Pasey brings out Dawson's wild side. He's usually the one who can get Dawson into trouble. Dawson has had a crush on Jen since the first time they met. He has trouble with girls, that or he's just had little experience with them.

Joey Potter is fifteen years old and lives in Capeside, Massachusetts. She lives 'down the creek' from her best-friend Dawson, with her sister and her black boyfriend. Her mother died with birth complications. She's known Dawson all her life and usually visits him through his bedroom window. She dislikes Dawson's other friend, Pasey, very much, although they got along pretty good in one episode. She thinks that life has nothing to give her, especially Dawson.

Pacey Witter is fifteen years old and lives in Capeside, Massachusetts. His best friend is Dawson Leery, who he thinks needs a little help when it comes to the ladies. He doesn't believe it when he and his teacher have a relationship, and when she leaves, it all goes to his head. He tries to act like he knows what he's doing, but he still has trouble of his own. He looks at life as a game, and he believes he knows how to play.

Jen Lindley is fifteen years old and just moved to Capeside, Massachusetts from New York. She had some troubles back home, including sex and alcohol, which she rarely states but is known to some. Her father sent her to Capeside probably just to get rid of her, for he caught her in his own bed with her boyfriend. She and Dawson really started to like each other. She went out with him but quickly backed off to cool off. She just doesn't want to repeat what she's already done.
